Day 17 – Hobo Camp

Narration Here.

MJB (Mary Jean Blaisdell) says let the adventure begin! The first stop would be a short 94 miles to Fairmont, MN where Kevin spent a few of his early years, up through grade 4, learning how to ride a bike, playing in the park, and fishing.

The Flying Goose campground came highly recommended from Aunt Carol and Uncle Bill who spent many a summer on Lake Imogene and the other 5 lakes in the area.

Set up was easy since only electric, and water hook up were connected. The pull thru site was 100 feet long, which was plenty of room for the RV and Toad, in fact the toad stayed connected to the RV until fully docked in the site.

A trip into town would primarily be to find Kevin's old home and school. A side trip was also planned to search out a Geocache in the area, and get some items at the grocery store.

An earlier google map search had located Lincoln Park where Kevin was sure his old house was located. He recalled times that he would walk from home to the park, just down the street, to play on the swings (which were now MIA) and rolling down the grassy hills to Lake George. The park was nice and well maintained and had houses, many with boat ramps, lining the shores. Walking down to the water, Kevin looked up the hill and pointed to his old house, “That's it !”. On the subsequent drive around the block Kevin stopped to take a few pictures of the front of the 1.5 story house. Kevin has very fond memories of his first grade class walking to the house to see his room that was painted like a circus tent complete with life size images of a ring master, seal with a ball, a kid buying a ticket at a booth, a Lion and tamer, and a juggling clown! All skillfully hand painted by Kevin's mom Glorianna.

A nearby boat ramp supplied an ideal place to capture the serenity of the area with the Drone!

About 2 blocks from the park was Lincoln grade school where Kevin attended Kindergarten thru 4 -5th grades. This brought out a 'Lincoln' connection in Kevin's life...played in Lincoln Park, attended Lincoln grade school, and went to Lincoln HS... hummm.

MJB had identified a GeoCache near a local park. The Toad was parked and the hunters were off in search for the hidden 'treasure'. Kevin headed across a cement walking bridge and yelled at Theresa from the other side. MJB and Theresa quickly took after him to find themselves on a floating path, that wandered past a Hobo Camp. This was a viable Hobo Camp up until the late 1950's. It was there that the vagabonds would be fed by the towns folk and stay to await a passing train to take them to the next destination.

The path continued under a bridge and into another park that housed a Train depot and a prairie dog exhibit. The group failed to find any Geocaches this time but did find these other treasures that made the hunt worth the effort.

One last stop a the store then back to the RV to warm up some leftovers collected from the various IA feedings for dinner and do some more blog catch up.
